Chapter 14

Rosannah

I’m awoken from my sleep by a creaking floorboard. Damn you, Raphael! Sneaking in my room again! I open my eyes and sit up straight. I see a dark figure hidden by the shadows in the far corner of the room. Hold on, the floorboard creaked. Honestly, can I put it past Raphael to play tricks on me? No, plus there’s no way anyone or anything could sneak in here without him knowing. I relax with a huge sigh.

“Raphael, this is no time to be playing tricks on me!” I whisper angrily. There’s no response. What’s he playing at? “Raphael, I know you’re there. I know that only you would creep into my room to torture me more than you already have,” I say as the dark figure shifts slightly. “Raphael, stop being so stupid and come out into the light so I can see you!” I demand. The figure steps forward into a pool of moonlight streaming in through the window. It highlights their face, and I can see straight away that it’s not Raphael. I should be incredibly frightened, but for some bizarre reason, I’m not. I feel so drawn to him like I would follow him to the ends of the earth and back. He’s ruggedly handsome with cropped blond hair and piercing green eyes. His cheekbones sit high and his jaw is shadowed with stubble. I’m completely mesmerised. I don’t understand why I’m so attracted to him. He’s nowhere near as gorgeous as Raphael, and yet, I feel the pull of him. He holds out a hand to reveal an acorn. I look down at it confused. Why on earth is he showing me that?

“Don’t worry,” he whispers, looking slightly worried. Suddenly, he throws the acorn at me, and it hits me straight in the forehead.

“Ow, what the hell was that for?” I yell, rubbing my head with my hand, trying to ease the pain. He walks confidently over to me.

“Sorry about that. I had to be sure they hadn’t changed you. If you were changed you would have caught and crushed that acorn,” he says as he bends down and collects it from the floor. Throwing it in the air, he catches it and pockets it as he stands.

“So, instead, you decided to crush it on my forehead?” I ask sarcastically. “Well, I’m certainly not one of them. What are you doing here?” I ask him as he sits next to me on the bed, looking at my forehead. He then focuses on my eyes. I can see that he’s as mesmerised by me as I am of him. What is this all about?

“My name is Alex. Now I can see you don’t have those grey eyes. I’m here to rescue you,” he says, his eyes fixed on mine.

“Why?” is all I can manage with those deep green pools in front of me.

“You see, I’m part of a group that spends its time hunting down missing people who have been kidnapped by vampires. We use magic spells to help locate vampires and their captives.
